Historically, the Teflon® brand was first used by DuPont for non-stick coatings for cookware made with different food safe coatings as regulated for food contact. Eventually, the non-stick coatings spread to other non-food contact coatings to improve characteristics and functionalities applicable to other products such as lining of hoses, pipes and equipment, finishes for textile fabrics, carpets, floor coverings and coatings for tile, wood and paints. The Teflon® trademark and the coatings and finishes it represents have an unusual combination of chemical and physical properties resulting from the specific structure of their composition. The bonds between its particles are extremely strong, which prevents it from reacting with other compounds. It makes Teflon® surfaces non-sticking, resistant to abrasion and atmospheric conditions. Moreover, Teflon® surface protector coats are more resistant to water, which protects the painted surfaces against water penetration.
